We welcome snowmobilers as we are located in one of the main corridor trails and skiers will find Cannon Mountain only 20 minutes away. Don't expect to leave hungry! We specialize in large country breakfasts using our own berries and other local products. Join us for hospitality and a taste of the country.

Margaret and Mike McKenna are your hosts at the Blueberry Farm Bed & Breakfast. Our large renovated 1850 farmhouse is located 5 miles miles from the beautiful village of Sugar Hill. We are also within 20 miles of two ski areas, six golf courses and many other attractions the North Country has to offer.

If your stay is during the summer, you can witness our annual blueberry harvest during the months of July and August. When the blueberries have gone by, the fields turn into a sea of bright red reminding us that the foliage season is just around the corner. If you visit during the winter bring your snow machines. The local trail leading to the state trail system is only 100 feet behind our house.

    HISTORY

In 1865 six year old Grant Messer watched as a raging fire devastated his childhood home. Undaunted his family moved up on the hill overlooking Hanno Pond to a house that had been built twenty years earlier. Three generations of the Messer/Hatch family occupied the farmhouse, including Olive Hatch who was the granddaughter of Grant Messer. The homestead operated as a dairy farm for most of the next 123 years.

Even the henhouse that is currently occupied by 14 laying hens has a wee bit of history. It was originally the milk parlor for the dairy farm and was located down by the roadside until a flood forced its relocation. This is the only building that Grant Messer would recognize from his childhood home if he was with us today.

As recently as 1969 there was still a cow barn on the property located on a lower section of field behind the hen house. Unfortunately it had fallen into an irrepairable state and was destroyed in a controlled burn. Over the years the original 85 acres was sold off until just the main house and eight acres remained.

In 1986 the property was purchased by Margaret McKenna. She began a two year restoration that added new construction where it was needed and allowed for preservation of most of the historic charm within the house.

Margaret had the goal of keeping the house as self sufficient as possible. The next two years were devoted to adjusting the soil and lowering the PH for the acid loving plants. In 1989 she purchased and planted 1200 cultivated high bush blueberrys that were three years old. In 1994 the first limited harvest of berries took place and each ensuing year yielded larger and larger crops. The yearly harvest takes place in July and August and fresh blueberries and blueberry jam are sold at the roadside stand on Route 302 using the "honor system." We also have visitors come to pick their own berries which makes for a nice family outing.

In the self sufficient spirit Margaret and her Husband began talking about a Bed and Breakfast. Two rooms were available and with some clever remodeling work by son Brian the B&B was born. The first two upstairs rooms were rented in September of 2000. By the next summer it was evident that two rooms were not enough and two downstairs rooms were added.

In the cooler months guests can expect their breakfast to be cooked on the antique Glenwood wood-burning kitchen range. All year long you can count on large country breakfasts cooked to your order. We have specialties of the house such as blueberry pancakes and other favorites.

Besides the beautiful views of the pond, hills and blueberry bushes you will also enjoy a spacious deck off the breakfast room and a screened-in gazebo, hiking trails and of course the 20X40 foot pool. Solar heat keeps the pool between 78 and 85 degrees during the summer. Fall is also the ideal time to visit and enjoy our unequalled foliage or join us in the winter for easy access to ski areas and all major Snowmobile Trails right from our back yard.
